Chimpanzees are threatened by the bushmeat trade, which represents a perpetual
serious threat to African wildlife and primates in particular. Wildlife is now
snatched from the forests in increasingly large numbers to fuel heavily
commercialised trade, which supplies large cities and even extends to foreign
countries. Chimpanzees are also snatched from the wild to supply the pet trade
and entertainment industry. Many are abandoned when they become fully grown,
boisterous adults.
From an original 25 range countries, chimpanzees have
already been wiped out from five and are at extreme risk of extinction in a
further nine. Sadly, today only ten African countries can lay claim to having
more than 1,000 chimpanzees.
